Matthew was born in Minnesota and spent his childhood there fishing, boating, and generally enjoying the outdoors before moving to Clovis, NM at age 13. Attending church with a friend when he was 17, he heard the pastor ask if there was anyone who wanted to be 100% sure of not going to hell when they died, and he realized then that he didn’t have this kind of assurance. So he prayed asking Jesus into his heart and for forgiveness of his sins. He began to read his Bible and to grow in understanding and desire to learn more.
After high school, he spent 6 years in the Army Reserves and graduated from the University of NM with a B.S. in Civil Engineering. While living and working in Albuquerque, Matthew met his soon-to-be bride. They attended Del Norte Baptist church together and were married there 6 months later in December 1996.
After much prayer and consideration, he and his wife moved to Colorado Springs in the spring of 2000 with a job change and began attending Rocky Mountain Calvary. At the time, Matthew thought he would stay with this company for the next 10 years, but God had other plans. Church had become ‘something we do’ on Sundays with little effect during the work week. At a Men’s Retreat, he was confronted by God about “playing Church” and then prayed to surrender to all that God had for him. A little over a year later, Matthew was asked by the Pastor at church to lead Men’s Prayer and later began teaching Men’s Bible Study.
By March 2002 Matthew had quit his job in construction management and was full time in ministry with RMC. He was ordained in March 2006 and continued to serve on staff counseling, teaching, and encouraging people in the sufficiency of God’s Word.
In the summer of 2006, God opened their eyes to the need in the Cheyenne Mountain neighborhood of Colorado Springs and they moved their family to the southwest part of town. Through prayer, Matthew and Lesley believed God had called them to begin a new church work that would impact this community.
